Whew! We did it! After 21 years of home education, we have graduated all four of our kids!! We homeschooled from K to 12th, including our youngest who has autism and is now attending college. It’s an awesome feeling, my friends!
I’m Susanne, and I’m a fifth-generation San Diegan. My official title here is Senior Teacher, Staff Writer, and Curriculum Developer; in fact, I joined the Brave Writer team in 2002, just over two years after Julie launched this amazing learning lifestyle. (I remember her unloading copies of our original manual The Writer’s Jungle from the trunk of her car before Brave Writer was Brave Writer!)
I earned a B.A. in Literature from Point Loma Nazarene University and a Master of Arts in English (emphases on medieval lit, 19th century British lit, and poetry) from the University of San Diego before teaching freshman composition, MLA research, German, ancient/medieval world literature, and even a bit of Shakespeare at PLNU, USD, and other universities. For twenty years, I taught expository writing and literature courses (including Shakespeare and poetry) to late elementary through high school students at our homeschool independent study program.
In addition to co-editing two scholarly books, recently I have been editing several novels for publication. In addition, my poems and essays have been published in various venues including Victoria and Ruminate magazines. For the past few years, I have been publishing stories and serialized novels online where my work has garnered a devoted readership, plus I have been blogging since 2006. I also lead a monthly writers’ workshop (with some awesome writers!) in our mountain community.
At various times in my Brave Writer journey, I have contributed to Brave Writer’s Arrow, Boomerang, and Slingshot issues. My major passions include Shakespeare, poetry, MLA research, grammar, and fan fiction. I’ve been crowned the unofficial Emoji Queen here at Brave Writer, and I am so excited to work with you and your kids!!
